Traineeships are wonderful opportunities that allow you to get your career underway while you’re still getting a qualification. Start learning more about your field of choice before you’re even done with study. No need to wait until you’re fully qualified, learn on the job and earn while you learn!

What is A Traineeship?

A traineeship is when an employer creates a job for the purpose of training up new staff. This allows students to start working while they are still studying their chosen qualification. For the employer, they get to train someone up the way they want to and may employ the student permanently on completion of the traineeship.

Traineeships generally lasts for between 1 – 2 years and can be done if you’re studying anywhere between Certificate II to diploma level. Many people ask what the difference is between a traineeship and an apprenticeship, as they are often more familiar with the term ‘apprenticeship’. By contrast, apprenticeships are for a longer duration of usually 3 – 4 years. There are some other differences as well, but that’s the main one. Whether it will be a traineeship or an apprenticeship usually depends on what’s standard in the industry you’re in.

What Are the Benefits of Traineeships?

There are plenty of benefits to completing a traineeship while you study. It might be harder because you have to both work and study at the same time, but these benefits make it worthwhile.

How to Find Traineeships

When you study at the College of Health and Fitness, we will help you to find a traineeship relevant to your education. We make it easy by helping you prepare to approach an employer about offering a traineeship. As employers receive incentives from the government for taking on trainees, it’s usually not too hard to find a company to take you on.

You will be given the option of doing a traineeship either part-time or full time. When you decide to do it part-time, you may be working for around 15 hours a week as you need to be there often enough to learn the skills you need to. Full-time trainees will work and train between 36 – 38 hours a week, generally. This is a much bigger time commitment. Which one you go for will depend mostly on your lifestyle and other commitments. For example, if you have kids to look after or another existing job that you will continue.
